Zusammenfassung: In the conservation and restoration of paintings and painted wooden objects, consolidants are
often used to ensure and preserve the long-term condition of the items. However, salts present
in the surrounding air or within the object can compromise the effectiveness of these
consolidants. The present study focuses on the behaviour of consolidants in the presence of
salts and provides insights that can serve as a background for further experimentation.
To approach the topic, old restoration works were examined and compared, and additional
information on different consolidants was gathered. The information obtained from the old
restoration works aided in selecting the salts and consolidants (fish glue, Plextol B500, Klucel
E, and Benecel A4C). The introductory chapters provide an overview of the characteristics of
the materials used and the comparative objects. The subsequent chapters on the test series will
address the preparation of consolidants using solutions of varying salt concentrations, as well
as further investigations and test series focusing on important factors such as shrinkage
behaviour, adhesion, cohesion, and other properties.
The final chapters reflect on the conducted tests, discuss the obtained results, and provide an
impetus for further research.
