| Abstract: | The impregnation of sandstones with linseed oil has been a widespread conservation measure during earlier centuries, and is back for a new evaluation with its application on two types of sandstone of the bernese cathedral. This preventive action aims at reducing the rainwater penetration and thus minimising deterioration through weathering. Aspects regarding the application method, common physical material parameters, as well as the chemical durability of such a treatment were researched. Optical microscopy, SEM, FT-IR and histochemical staining were applied to observe the oil penetration and film formation within the pore structure of the sandstone, and to visualise the degradation phenomena on exposed samples. Environmental conditions and inhomogeneity of the building material seem to both influence the effectiveness and durability of this conservation treatment. While surficial wetting apparently continuously increases upon degradation of the oil within the exposed weathering layer, water absorption remains reduced even after 2.5 years of exposure. Of particular note, however, is the behaviour of mortar joints and patches identified as a potential zone of increased water uptake. |
