Karin Mühlbauer: Examination of removal dirt and brass-based paint on gilded picture frames from Old Master Picture Gallery Dresden by using Nd:YAG-Laser back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The gilding of the picture frames (Old Master Picture Gallery Dresden) from the second half of
18th century has been reduced to the red bole. The losses of gilding were inpainted by appliing
brass-based paint (“bronze”). The appearance of the frames has changed to the worse by the
now darkly oxidised bronze and additionally by dirt. With laser (1064 nm), the bronze could be
reduced, but not taken off completely. A dirt-removal succeeded by using very low fluences and
achieved good results. Comparing with alternative cleaning methods, the laser’s advantages are
selectivity, less damage, a high quality of the cleaned surface and a saving of time.
