Abstract: | The renaissance castle of Steinau an der Srasse is distinguished because of a high quality program of mural paintings, which is dated to the middle of the 16th century. Most of the paintings are superimposed by numerous plaster and limewash layers of the past centuries. Particularly with regard to future plans for the utilization as museum, there were doubts about whether the removal of the paintings in a selected location is consistent with conservation and preservation positions. To judge the uncovering of paintings stratigraphic studies, painting techniques and removal researches took place in certain areas. This study is focussed mainly on dynamical moisture processes in the water sensitive paintings, due to water infiltration and waterdamp barriers of superimposed polymer layers in the interior. Based on extensive scientific, biological and physical investigations a concept of conservation was developed. Further more the removal of the mural paintings was considered critically. |
