Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:
Abstract: This thesis sets focus on changes in synthetic-organic polymers in works of art, which have been closely examined during a monitoring of the collection of paintings and sculpture of Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
The opening segment presents an introduction into the subject matter of synthetic-organic polymers and the mechanisms of their degradation.
Following is a survey of the works of art in the collection of Museum Ludwig that contain relevant materials and a brief history of the use of polymers in works of art.
The main part contains observations on the methods of a „condition survey“ or „monitoring“ and a closer examination of possibilities of definition and a quantifiable terminology of damage phenomena in polymers, thus creating tools for the systematic condition control of synthetic-organic polymers in works of art.
