Abstract: | This paper discusses the conservation and examination of a sword excavated in block. Remains of the wooden scabbard and handle are documented and analysed. After a thorough review of the available literature on the subject of consolidation of wood, a test row was compiled to determine the consolidant as well as the concentration most suitable for conservation purposes of the organic remains. Desalination and related problems are discussed. A showcase was designed and constructed to stabilise the climate and prevent further corrosion. The description of the restoration and conservation treatment is followed by detailed explanations referring about the excavation and the wooden chamber grave. In conclusion, typological characteristics of the sword and which were exposed during treatment are described. |
