Abstract: | Removing old layers of paint from the surface of furniture is an important matter in the field of restoration. Painted furniture has often been newly mounted. Before removing a layer of paint, one needs to determine if this removal is sensible and corresponds to the rules of restoration. In order to answer these questions, thorough examination of the material is required. Scientific examinations of the different layers, of the composition of the material, of the damage and of the construction in general help to determine the state, the material and the worth of a layer of paint. Different procedures of removing layers can be put to use, according to the composition of a layer. A general survey of methods can be useful in order to choose an appropriate procedure. In series of tests the different procedures are tested and evaluated. The thesis treats the removal of layers in general. Different objects are examined for pigments and binders using scientific analyses. A detailed survey of the methods describes different physical and chemical methods of removal of paints. In series of tests the most appropriate procedures are put to use and evaluated. All steps of work and examination are documented and will be evaluated in a summary. |
