Abstract: | The subject of this master´s thesis is the painting "The Holy Family" and the accompanying decorative frame made of papier-mâché from Marienburg Castle near Pattensen, Hanover in Lower Saxony. The main focus was the examination of the painting, with emphasis on the surface varnishes and their crepations. In addition, the focus layed on the development of a conservation and restoration concept for the entire treatment of the painting and the decorative frame with the aim of improving the presentability of the entire work. The varnish problems that the painting presents gave rise to reflect on the topic of de-restoration and to make appropriate recommendations for future restorations. |
