Abstract: This master thesis deals with the handling and care of human remains in archaeological restoration and conservation. The theoretical principles of codes of the profession and ethical guidelines, which the work is based on, are evaluated and reviewed in reference to the care of the care of human remains. A case study based on the uncovering of an ancient burial ground and its conservation is documented and issues and challenges in dealing with human remains are assessed. Interviews with professional colleagues will be conducted to explore the procedures and methods used in everyday practice and to identify needs and strategies. The aim of the work is to shed light on the decision-making and thought processes involved in dealing with human remains, to identify conflicts and their backgrounds, ans to sensitize people to the topic.
