Abstract: The subject of this thesisis the consideration of the possibilities offered by 3D-technology in restoration, such as the restoration of a ´´Römhilder Kästchen´´ from the collection of the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein Gotha. As a first step, the object has been examined with regard to the used materials and existing damage. In addition, interactive mapping was carried out, based on a 3D technical drawing. A CT-scan was carried out in order to understand more about the construction and the working of the materials. Using the images, it was also possible to draw conclusions about the damage, previous restorations and other particular characteristics of the object. The aim of the work is to explore and critically evaluate the possibilities of the 3D-technology using the present object as an example. Hereby, the areas of documentation, investigation and loss compensationare firstly to be examined in general with regards to previous applications in restoration and then applied specifically to the present object. Particular attention is paid here to the evaluation of the possibilities and limits in terms of loss compensation.
