Overview:

Abstract: This master thesis deals with the investigation and the creation of a concept of a painted ceiling panel from the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin. During the research on provenance, references to the origin and to the date of creation are followed up and further processed in an art historical analysis. The thesis focuses on the creation of a conservation and restoration concept based on the knowledge about the artwork‘s condition. Additionally to the dusty surface, the loss of painting and the insect damage, the appearance of the painted ceiling panel is mainly affectet by the material loss of 20% of the wooden panel. As a result of this damage, the object is in an unstable state. An emphasis of this work is therefore the stabilization of the object and a discussion on adding a part of the wooden panel. The latter includes the discussion about reconstruction by digital means. After several test series, a successfully developed treatment plan is presented. In order to plan a museum presentation, preventive recommendations and an exhibition proposal are formulated. After several test series, a successfully developed treatment plan is presented. With regard to a presentation in the museum, preventative recommendations and exhibition proposals are made at the end.
