Overview:

Abstract: This Master thesis deals with the late Gothic wall paintings in St. Nikolaus church in Bobeck, Saale-Holzland-District, Thuringia, Germany. In addition to some aspects regarding painting techniques and technology, which illustrate the connection of these paintings with contemporary illuminated manuscripts, an emphasis was put on the possibility of exposing the mural painting. On the basis of similar literature, criteria concerning the present-day procedure of an exposure could be established.
Attuned to the surrounding climatic and environmental conditions, a sample-area was tested for conservation and restoration measures. The results served as the basis for a specification for tenders. Several options regarding the future presentation of the mural painting in connection with the use of the church were being discussed. Procedures described and realized in this work shall be used as the basis for the future handling of the paintings.
