Abstract: | A "Schlittengeläut" in possession of the "Germanisches Nationalmuseum" in Nuremberg is the topic of this diploma thesis. Two "Schellenkissen" of the "Schlittengeläut" were bequeathed, one for the neck and one for the croup of a horse. Both are composite objects made of leather, textile and metal. In addition to the historical classification and dating, the methods of manufacture have been researched using available literature and observations. The reasoning for methods of the conservation and restoration is presented. Emphasis is placed on the consolidation of the leather, cleaning of the textiles and the removal of the metal corrosion. In addition, treatment with leather dressings is discussed. The conservation and partial restoration of the "Mähnenkammkissen" and a partial conservation of the "Kruppenkissen" have been completed. The preventive conservation includes a suggestion for a carrier rack suitable for display and storage, and guidelines for future storage conditions. |
