Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the conservation of animation cels from the German Institute for Animated Film. For the active conservation, the animation cels of the film „Plaste Color (II)“, 1968, of the animator Heinz Engelmann have been selected. Those belong to the most endangered cels of the collection. The main focus of this thesis is the consolidation of flaking paint layer of the polyvinyl-acetate and alkyd resin paint from the cellulose acetate sheet. A consolidation medium is determined by series of experiments, followed by the practical realization. Further, a concept for the preventive conservation of the animation cels from the collection has been developed in the theoretical part.
