Abstract: | Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg created three altar screens for the St. Mary Rosary church in Mönchengladbach-Eicken in the years from 1882 until 1885, which are subject of this paper. An art historical assessment of the altar screens executed in the style of gothic revival is given as well as an iconographic analysis of the depictions. The main part presents the technological findings and an assessment of the state of conservation as result of the research conducted for this paper. Discussion focusses on the conservation problems present as well as the appearance of the altar screens, which is highly impaired by reworking and alterations. On this basis a concept for conservation treatment is developed. |
