Abstract: | This thesis deals with the issue of the previous conservation treatments. Nowadays conservators have to often face damage caused by earlier conservation methods and materials. In case of the statue of St. John of Nepomuk from Erl in Tyrol the previous treatmens of conservation were irreversible. To clarify the history of the statue’s conservation, dokumentary sources and conservator’s survey were used in combination with scientific analyses. A conservation of the conservation was the only possible way to preserve the original substance and to re-erect the statue in Erl. Besides damage analysis and design of a conservation concept, the hands-on conservation was undertaken. The development and expansion of the Nepomuk cult was summarized in the theoretical part of the thesis. |
