Overview:

Abstract: The architectural models at the MAK-Exhibition Galleries were built during the two-phased reconstruction of Frank O. Gehrys private house in Santa Monica, California in 1978 and 1991-92. Both models can be defined as working models. The main material used consists of the so-called composition board, which is a material-combination of cardboard and a plastic foam core. The practical part of the diploma thesis focuses on the conservation of the objects without affecting the original character of the working model. The theoretical part of this work investigates the aging-process of Polystyrene- and Polyurethane-foam-fillings turning yellow and brittle. A system for edge-protection is tested for a long-term preservation of architectural models and preventive guidelines for the presentation in a museal context are established.
