Abstract: | The 19th century glass mosaic „Virgin with Child“ of the Mathias Salcher Jr. family tomb is located at the cemetery in Mauer in Vienna. This thesis focuses on a technological analysis and a condition survey, as well as the conservation of the mosaic based on investigations with conservation science and scientific methods. The mosaic tesserae are made of Venetian glass and set in a mortar bed with a steel reinforcement and a brass frame. Due to its complex technological structure and exposed outdoor position, various damages like corrosion of the steel reinforcement, and increasing of the volume of the glass mosaic occurred. Because of its critical state of preservation, the mosaic is detached from the tombs wall to enable the removal of the corroded steel reinforcement. Other measures include the development of a backing system, removal and resetting of the glass tesserae, integration of lacunae and reattachment of the glass mosaic to the tombs wall. |
