Milena Mertins: A wall painting in the former POW camp Sandbostel - Strategies for a lasting preservation and presentation back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The given paper examines the state of preservation of an altar wall painting in the former POW camp Sandbostel (lower Saxony, Germany). It discusses ways of preserving and presenting wall paintings. This painting was probably from 1940 or 1941 and was part of a sacral space in a barrack which was occupied by prisoners of war. It was hidden under a lime wash for a long time. Due to recent demolition works, it can nowadays be found on an exterior wall. The presented bachelor thesis deals with particular problems of preservation caused by this very fact.
The material and the condition of the painting to be achieved via restoration processes are systematically presented. In addition, the paper shows strategies for a lasting preservation of the painting. The thesis draws further attention to the decay of a unique historic monument in Germany and provides the basis for adequate measures of preservation and design in the future.
