Abstract: | The focus of this thesis is thread-by-thread tear mending, for the treatment of torn canvas paintings on linen supports. In this comparative investigation, uniaxial tensile tests on adhesive films, jointed linen threads and canvas strips, as well as biaxial tensile testing and burst pressure tests on canvas specimens have been carried out for the first time. To show the correlation between these various testing procedures, tear repairs were prepared with a selection of different synthetic resin based dispersions and modifications of sturgeon glue for butt and overlapping joints. Generally, the test methods using fabric specimens (i. e. multiple threads) seemed to be the most appropriate way to evaluate mended tears. Furthermore, some adhesives showing promising tear mending properties were found and the strengthening effect of bridging threads for butt joints was proven. |
