Abstract: | The thesis deals with questions of preservation, documentation and presentation of room-specific artwork of the 20th century on the example of the picture series created by the northern German artist Erich Klahn (1901-1978). In general the thesis is divided into three sections. In the context of the art-historical classification the first paragraph takes a global look at room-specific artwork. The center of observation is formed by the definition and the historical development of this picture type. The preceding theoretical remarks are followed by reflections on object-preservation and documentation. The following main part is about the artist life and artistic development as well as the actual object documentation and evaluation. As the study does not see itself only as a documentary work but also as a contribution of developing theoretical foundations to the conservation of modern and contemporary art, not least of room-specific artwork, within the third section the main ethical questions are presented and discussed. This concerns particularly problems of dealing with artistic interior constructions in the private sector. In conclusion the knowledge gained from the determination should be translated to the picture series created by Erich Klahn. This finally applies the development of a concept for their future preservation, presentation and use. |
