Abstract: | Stucco marble was widely spread as decorating material in the Lower Bavarian area during the baroque time. This diploma thesis provides an overview of the stucco marble decorations of the churches in Metten, Loh and Aldersbach. The main focus is put on a comparison of colour design and texture and on the issue of deterioration. Special emphasis is given to the Mensa of the Benedictus altar in the church of Metten (Deggendorf, Lower Bavaria), which is the only remaining Mensa containing authentic core from the time around 1722. The aim is to come up with a restoration and conservation concept which allows for the almost complete conservation of the authentic stucco marble decoration. The concept wants to describe alternative possibilities of how to deal with aged, weathered and damaged stucco marble surfaces, thereby taking into consideration climatic conditions and local peculiarities. Detailed analysis and documentation are the foundation for a restoration and conservation concept which will retain the original stucco marble core. The results of a qualitative and quantitative salt analysis as well as an analysis of colourants are discussed. Moreover, addition measurements of the surrounding environment such as humidity, temperature, which were conducted over a period of 12 months, are interpreted, and evaluated considering the mechanisms of damage. Work samples were set up on site. |
