Abstract: | The application of tetraethylsilicate (TEOS) on carbonate materials often results in a long lasting hydrophobic effect, possibly because there is not enough humidity for the gelation. The moisture absorption of the materials in conjunction with relative humidity was measured by an Isothermal Water Vapor Absorption. By conditioning specimen in varying humidities the effect of material and ambient humidity on the reaction of tetraethylsilicate was investigated. Tetraethylsilicate was applied for consolidation of stone material and as binding media for repair mortar both with carbonate components. Measurements of Capillary Water Uptake by Water Drop Method, Capillary Water Uptake and Capillary Water Uptake under atmospheric pressure could determine that hydrophobia decreases with higher humidity throughout the reaction process of the tetraethylsilicate. |
