Abstract: | The mural retable from the 13th Century in the former collegiate church of St. Castor in Karden on the Mosel is one of the few remaining early retables in Rhineland-Palatinate. As a result of the uncovering in 1954/55 enormmous losses of the original stock can be documented. The 1968 detachment operation, performed as an emergency measure, arguably rescued the medieval painting from total destruction. The use of adhesives and preservatives, however, prove to be main factor of the current state of damage. The present work includes the study of the technology of the medieval painting, as well as the history of its restoration. Furthermore it investigates occurring damage phenomena and their causes, and finally forms a concept for a possible preservation. |
