Overview:

Abstract: The present master’s thesis deals with a polychrome wooden sculpture of the protestant St. Cäcilien church in Everode in the administrative district of Hildesheim. The crucified Jesus is displayed in life-size. The figure is now baldheaded but originally showed applications of natural hair. The work was created about 1500 and is now used as a devotion-picture above an altar.
In the first part of this paper the cultural and art historical context regarding the subject of examination is discussed and a classification of the sculpture is carried out. This is followed by the technological investigation of the timber and the paint layers with a main aim towards the artwork’s state of origin.
The next chapter addresses previous measures of restoration and their materials used, succeeded by a condition report and the determination of damages.
Based on the previous examination of the sculpture’s technique and material, as well as the condition report and the damage determination, a theoretical concept for conservation and restoration is developed and a proposal to improve the environmental conditions of the sculpture is pointed out.
