Abstract: | The tomb of Gebhard the XIVth of Querfurt, situatet in the church of Querfurt Castle, is a stone sculpture from the end of the 14th century. It was influenced by the works of Peter Parler. A special characteristic are the preserved remains of rich polychrome paintings. As a result of extended scientific analysises, six different paintings have been distinguished. They form a historical succession of paintings, which has been documented only in a few rare cases before. For most parts drawings have been made to reconstruct the different polychrome paintings. The deterioration process of the sandstone and the layers of painting demanded a comprehensive programme for the preservation and restoration of the tomb. In preliminary tests methods and materials have been tested to preserve the layers of painting and to clean the surface of the stone. |
