Abstract: | As Christianity spread in the 11th c., the Nikolai- church marked the eastern boundary of its influence. A few years later this building lost its function as the main church of Goerlitz. A renovation took place in 1925/26 consisting of a reconfiguration of the liturgically insignificant church into a memorial for soldiers killed in action during the WW1. The resulting design of this late medieval church was of an expressionist nature that is unique in its characteristics. Due to Massive damages another renovation accrued between 1967 and 1979. The inside of the church was fully redone, with the exception of the west gallery, leaving the expressionist design practically unreadable. In this Diploma the state of these wall paintings is discussed and a program for there conservation, restoration and reutilization is developed in order to revive this unique expressionistic monument. |
