Overview:

Abstract: The thesis develops a conservation strategy for the west portal of the church St. Petri of Bautzen. The building stone used is a granodiorit, also called “Lausitzer Granit”. Forms of decay and decay mechanisms were investigated. Also the possibilities of cleaning and consolidating the stone were studied. The investigations on cleaning involved the air abrasive technique using different micro powders as abrasives and varying pressures. Test cleaning panels were carried out in situ and evaluated by using a portable digital microscope. Since the stone shows severe granular disintegration, investigations on
the possibilities of stone consolidation were carried out. A series of artificially weathered drill cores was used as sampling material. The consolidants used were 2 modified silicic acid ester products, an acrylic- and an epoxy product. Multiple impregnation cycles were applied. As a result only limited strengthening of the stone can be measured so far. The epoxy resin showed good results. Further research should be undertaken in this direction.
