Abstract: Experts regard Art forgery and especially Icon forgery as a very delicate matter and the misconception in the public eye is very common due to lack of knowledge and ignorance.
This thesis defines the term "forgery" under the aspects of art history, religion and the law and determines what classifies an Icon as forgery.
Furthermore the thesis elucidates the history of forgery, the legal situation as well as methods for detecting forgery.
