Abstract: | The diploma thesis investigates a “necessaire“ of a lady from the property of the margrave´s family of Baden. The veneered box contains implements for writing and sewing made out of steel, glass, porcelain, paper, wood and ivory. It is characterized by the so-called cut steel, a decoration method of facetted and polished steel nails, which are set next to one another. The motto “Le sentiment en fait le Prix” (Engl.: “The sentiment determines the value”) is situated on top of the “necessaire”. The thesis contemplates the art historical and cultural background of the “necessaire” and its contained objects. A further principal item of the paper is the documentation of the examination methods applied for determining the technology and condition of the “necessaire” and the related materials. A main focus lies in the examination of the cut steel - jewel production, as it is not often dealt with in literature. A specific concept of conservation and restauration and its application is documented which takes into account the versatile combination of materials. |
