Abstract: | In this Diploma, the use of microwave technology as an alternative treatment for eradication of pest infestation in wooden art objects is evaluated. Various coatings on different woods were selected and examined. The study is divided into two sections: firstly, a theoretical part covering the latest scientific research in this area; and secondly, an empirical part covering testing and evaluation. The first part explains the physical function of heating wood using microwaves and the relevant parameters that need to be assessed in respect to treatment. The second part contains a description of the testing methodology, the testing procedure itself, and the evaluation of the results. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the potential use of microwave heating treatment as an effective treatment for biological damage. |
