Abstract: | Transparent cellulose nitrate lacquers on furniture are rarely described in conservation literature. In order to give an overview about the production, the use and the ingredients of cellulose nitrate lacquers, the literature about lacquer technology is examined in this thesis. Thereby, a changing lacquer composition is revealed. For the first time, these composition changes are recorded chronologically. An examination of 24 lacquers shows different types of damage, which are assorted in eight categories of damage. To clarify the causes of damage the ingredients of the lacquers are detected by Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In one case, a loss of nitrogen is discovered using Fourier-transform-infrared-spectroscopy. This finding supports the thesis that lacquer damages can be a result of the degradation of cellulose nitrate. |
