Abstract: | The protestant church St. Marien in Salzwedel (Saxony-Anhalt), a five nave basilica, is a representative of the northern German brick gothic style. In the same place a church built of boulders about 1150 is first mentioned. A characteristic of the church building is the over 80 meter high tower, which stands with its lower section inside the Westwerk. The accomplished examination of the interior architectural surface and wall paintings dating from the 13th to the 15th century (except the wall paintings in the choir) shall contribute to the preparation of the polychromy re-design of the interior based on historic findings, which is planned by the congregation. Aim of the investigation is to provide an overview of assets and the state of conservation of the materials in order to create a basis for the assessment of the condition and to define necessary conservation treatments. First considerations are developed to implement treatments of the architectural surface and to protect the wall paintings during the conservation and restoration of the church. The presented work contains a historical chronology, physical measurements to analyze the properties of the building structure as well as phenomenological and scientific examination of mortars and polychromy. |
