Diana Vogel: Mask with cobweb matting from Vanuatu. Examination, documentation and restoration. back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This mask from Vanuatu was examined, documented and restored in the course of this thesis. It consists of a tapered bamboo framework covered in cobweb matting which was then covered in painted modelling paste made out of plant fibre. It is part of the collection from the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum Cologne. The main damage was caused by the collapse of the bamboo framework. There are holes and losses in the painted modelling paste and in the cobweb matting. The steps taken are, amongst others, the consolidation of the powdery paint layer, the reforming of the bamboo framework and the sewing of the cobweb matting. Finally, suggestions were made as to how to best display the object and how to store.
