Elise Malchow: Pitch stored in wet conditions. Conservation concept for a Bronze Age belt box from the Tollene Valley back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This paper deals with the proper conservation assessment and treatment of prehistoric pitch. The occasion is a Bronze Age belt box from the Tollense Valley, which is based on a very well preserved pitch decoration. The object has been kept in water since its recovery from the Tollense River and is to be dried. The objective of this master´s thesis is to develop a concept to prevent cracking in the pitch and flaking. The object will be documented and optically and instrumentally analysed (microscopically, x-ray, µ-CT, µ-XRF, GC-MS). Measures are discussed and test specimens made of bronze and birch pitch are aged. Test series on drying, exposure and solvents are then carried out. Possible risks of the treatment are deduced from this and thus a professional concept for the consolidation is created.
