During re-adhering absorbent flaking paint with sturgeon glue or gelatines, one would often like to gain the widest lateral distribution in a joint, the lowest penetration into the substrate and at the same time an adequately good adhesion. In conservation, the pre-wetting with alcohols has a strong tradition and it was shown by Laaser, Soppa et al. 2014 that it is a perfect pre-wetting agent for consolidation due to the better substrate penetration. However, it is not an effective agent for the re-adhesion of absorbent layers. This paper therefore investigates and compares pre-wetting and masking agents for gelatine (type A, 180 Bloom, 5%) such as ethanol, water-ethanol (1:1), water, 1% gelatine (type A, 180 Bloom), 1% methyl cellulose A4C, apolar solvents (mainly Shellsol T, see Soppa 2016) and Shellsol T with subsequent water pre-wetting. Furthermore, the method of combining gelatine/sturgeon glue with apolar solvents (see Petukhova and Bonadies 1993) is examined and compared to the pre-wetting and masking results.
