Zusammenfassung: | A feasibility study of the use of laser radiation (Nd:YAG laser at 355 nm and 1064 nm) was carried out for removal of transparent over-paintings from historic varnish layers, including laboratory prepared samples and a historic decorative wooden chamber paneling. The aim was to evaluate the possibility, selectivity and efficiency of the laser cleaning method using different wavelengths and energy-densities on different over-paintings. A large number of samples were prepared with known characteristics (type and number of layers, composition)simulating investigated stratification of the historic paneling. Samples with different top-layer compositions (transparent, dyed and slightly pigmented) were irradiated with different wavelengths and energy-density to investigate ablation characteristics. A set of diagnostic controls was used to study the effects of laser radiation on surface components, including optical examination analysis, such as UV-fluorescence and SEM techniques. In addition to laboratory tests further investigations pursued the aim to compare laser application with traditional solvent-based techniques, such as solvent pads and solvent gels. Both techniques were carried out to remove the over-painting to uncover the historic varnish of the decorative wooden chamber paneling. Investigations aimed on technical and economical aspects of the results presented by testing both techniques. |
