Zusammenfassung: | The painting technique of the important artist E. W. Nay (1902-1968) and his favourite paint material - Schall artists’ oil paints - have up to now not been examined closely. An analysis of the materials used for painting Blauflut (Museum Ludwig, Köln) showed, that severe damages in the paint layers - like drying cracks, flaking paint and binding medium migrating from paint films as a result of disturbed drying processes - can in part be attributed to the use of a mixture of gum arabic- and oil-based paints, possibly as a gum tempera. In addition to a consolidation technique for the highly sensitive matte and brittle paint layers a backing-system was developed to support stretcher and canvas of the large size painting. |
