Zusammenfassung: | The Jesuit church St-Michel in the city of Freiburg (Switzerland) was built between 1604-1613 according to the plan of Giovanni de Rosis and was redesigned between 1755-1757 by Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti who was supported by the painter Franz Anton Ermeltraut and the plasterer Giuseppe Antonio Albuzzi. It is a building of major importance to Freiburg because it reflects the intellectual activites, the creation of art and the social life taking place in the city during the past centuries. When looking at the church in its current state it becomes obvious that it is in need of restoration and conservation measures although more than one of these have taken place in the past. Within the scope of the thesis „The ceiling painting in the church of St-Michel in Freiburg (Switzerland)“ a number of historic sources were consulted, scientific examinations were undertaken, results were mapped and a small part of the ceiling was restored as a model. Based on all these actions a number of facts could be determined: First, the techniques Ermeltraut used to apply, second, the way the interior walls looked like in different time periods and, for the first time ever, knowledge was being gained about the history of restoration between 1895-1897. On the basis of the gathered and evaluated information this thesis discusses possible concepts of restoration. However, when dealing with restoration of St-Michel one should be aware of the fact that each of the former coat layers in the church’s history was deliberately wanted – by a group of the most significant decision makers in the so called State Council of Freiburg and therefore each of them has a right to exist. This thesis gives a broad overview of the history, the accoutrements, the former and the current state of the church. It is supposed to be a source to consult when it comes to deciding, planning and conducting future restoration and conservation measures in St-Michel. |
