Zusammenfassung: | The subject of this work is the investigation, documentation and conservation of the mitre which was found in the grave of archbishop D. Gonçalo Pereira in the cathedral of Braga, Portugal. The textile dates from the end of the twelfth or the beginning of the thirteenth century. It consists of four fragments. The front and back of the headdress as well as the front of the lappets are embroidered with metal threads in underside couching, the embroidery shows figurative scenes. Several layers of silk and linen fabrics were employed in the mitre, an additional layer of parchment was used to stiffen the headdress. The object is almost in its original state, without any significant alterations. All the materials are preserved, but they show different signs of degradation due to the situation in the grave. The fragments are heavily distorted, there are damages because of insects, the fibres are desiccated and partially brown and there is different soiling on the textile. After several preliminary experiments and tests, a treatment in a bath of alcohol proved to be the most suitable intervention. It was possible to treat the entire fragments without taking anything apart. By this procedure some of the soiling could be released. Furthermore the fragments could be reshaped. As a consequence the mitre can be better appreciated as a liturgical vestment and medieval work of art. |
