Zusammenfassung: | The Seiger Tower is the only surviving evidence of the Renaissance alterations made to Stolpen Castle in Saxony around 1559. The wall paintings on the first floor of the tower are the last remnants of the Renaissance decorative painting that was once found throughout the castle but was painted over in the 19th century. The study examines and documents the wall paintings and develops a plan for their conservation and restoration, with particular attention paid to climatic conditions and to salt damage. Two small areas were conserved and restored in order to assess appropriate methods. The theoretical section treats the conservation and aesthetic aspects involved in presentation of the paintings. |
