Zusammenfassung: Numerous facades, façade elements and decorative detailing on heritage protected Viennese buildings from the 19th and beginning of the 20th century were made using Roman cement. The material, which was patented in England in 1796 and was then forgotten by the 1920s, came back into production with the EU Research Project ROCEM (2003-2006). The core of this MA thesis is an investigation of the use of Roman cement as a suitable material for repair measures in architectural restoration projects. A 1913 façade of an apartment building at Esteplatz 7, 1030 Vienna was used as an example. Based on findings of the building’s original state, as well as the documentation of its damage, filling- and casting-mortars based on Roman cement and specifically designed for this façade were used as a model restoration.
