Zusammenfassung: | This dissertation covers the conservation and restoration of a large tambourine-like drum of the Yupik from Alaska, which arrived at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin in 1882. The painted drum skin made of walrus stomach is extraordinary. The meaning and position of the drum within the Yupik culture are as well represented as the ethical questions, which result from the treatment of an object named as drum of a shaman. The different possibilities for the analysis of animal membranes are presented, an overview of the current state of research for the treatment of these materials is given and the restoration of the object from glueing the drumskin together to its presentation in the showcase is documented. |
