The painting entitled „Tod des Kaiser Franz I. (II.)“ is attributed to Johann Nepomuk Ender (1793-1854) and dated 1835. Due to extensive adhesion losses and delamination the painting underwent a resin-impregnation as a consolidation treatment;, in a later step a wax-resin lining was added. These methods caused heat damage and planation of the paint layers. The main problem for the conservation is created by the hydrophobisation of the painting´s structure, which seriously complicates the stability of the consolidation and filling. Several tests were carried out to find an appropriate filler. Another main focus is the treatment of the large-scale paint losses, achieved by imitative pictorial integration, which was facilitated by aid of comparison with related examples.
