Zusammenfassung: | The present Bachelor-Thesis deals with a mural painting located in St. John the Baptist church, Olef (North-Rhine-Westphalia). The lime-based painting is dated into the 16th century and shows the patron saint of the church, St. John the Baptist with a lettered scroll above him. Following some later over-painting, a pulpit was placed in the 18th century directly on the surface of the hidden mural painting. After the removal of the pulpit in 1954, some painted fragments appeared on the wall followed by a total exposure of the mural. In 2000, some conservation and restoration work was carried out to fix loose and endangered plaster-fragments and to create a square field as a restoration example for the conservation of the entire painting. But there were no more interventions following-on from that. In addition to the analysis of the historic and technical aspects of the mural painting, the Thesis describes the mural’s condition with its damages, using the support of graphic and photographic documentation. By defining the amount and the level of damages and by giving a prognosis, the extent of the required conservation and restoration becomes clear. After the analysis of the causes of damage, some methodical thoughts in view of conservation, restoration and prevention including the earlier works in 2000 are being given. |
