Zusammenfassung: | The figure attributed to the Lombardian sculptor Andrea da Saronno originally comes from a threepart adoration scene and can be seen as a precursor to the Italian presepe. In addition to its highquality carving, the Berlin ensemble shows numerous particularities such as the impressive and intricate polychromy predominantly made in the sgraffito technique. This paper focuses on the exact technological investigation of the structure of the polychromy and paint. In the practical part of the paper a method was developed that helped to rid the surface of the dark dirt crusts and a relatively new coating without damaging the gold‐plating. This method was the only possibility to give the figures a uniform appearance and to make the well‐preserved polychromy and the high quality of the work visible. |
