Zusammenfassung: | The so‐called crown of the Virgin from the German National Museum in Nuremberg is composed of five silver‐gilt fleur‐de‐lis‐shaped links. Based on applied to the enamelling techniques, namely filigree and bassetaille enamelling, it represent a unique metalwork. Its fragmentary condition is characterized by a number of modifications and repairs as well as damaging effects of past cleaning measures. The dissertation aimed in getting a treatment concept for conservation and restoration of the crown. For that scientific examinations (microscopical, EDX, FTIR) of the metal surfaces and coatings, enamel compositions and stone facing was undertaking, as well as comprehensive explaining of the specialities of the manufacture. Furthermore the damages are described. In addition to mechanical damages above all deposits of detergents and corrosion formation predominated. The very different conditions of both enamelling techniques were striking. Whereas the filigree enamelling shows relative small losses, the bassetaille enamelling is hardly more present. The blue translucent enamel is mostly damaged. The main conservation and restoration problem was finding out the most careful method of cleaning which could been realized by mechanical techniques. |
