Zusammenfassung: | Two Yup’ik masks from the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., are the focus of this diploma thesis. Both masks are carved from wood, painted and decorated with feathers. After all information about the history of the two masks is summarized, an overview about Yup’ik culture and the usage and meaning of Yup’ik masks is given. After the condition of both masks is assessed, the analysis of the materials and techniques of construction is described. This technical information served as background for optimal conservation and restoration and helped to understand deterioration processes. Concepts of the conservation methods are presented. Emphasis is placed on the paint consolidation, the assembly of the masks, the reconstruction of missing parts, as well as the manufacture of protective mounts. The conservation and restoration of one mask and the partial conservation and restoration of the second mask are performed. |
