Zusammenfassung: | For the present diploma thesis a conservation and restoration plan was developed for the ancient Egyptian wall paintings in the longitudinal hall of TT 157, tomb of Neb-wenenef, in the Theban necropolis near Luxor in Egypt. The wall paintings in the tomb are in very poor condition. The figurative scenes and hieroglyphs are covered with compact layers of soot and grime, preventing a clear reading of the paintings. A main focus of the conservation project was to develop specific conservation methods and a sensitive cleaning technique to reduce the soot layers on the surface, which at the same time will enable egyptologists to decipher and make a facsimile of these important paintings. The treatment was performed on two test sections of the wall. Multispectral imaging methods using a digital camera system were investigated as a non-invasive method to visualize the paintings covered by soot. The methods were evaluated as an alternative to selective invasive cleaning, which would introduce concerns about the long term preservation of the surface as well aesthetic questions. |
