Zusammenfassung: Between 1764 and 1773, the cabinet-makers Johann Friedrich and Heinrich Wilhelm Spindler created a number of elaborately marqueted room panellings at the court of king Frederick II in Potsdam. For the purpose of this final thesis, one of them was put under extensive art-historical, technological and scientific investigations.
The marquetry techniques in which the work was executed were examined and compared with other techniques of the day, taken from various contemporary sources. Any still recognizable colourings of the inlaid veneers were documented and the nature of the organic colouring matters identified. As it turned out, the present darkening of the basic veneer was caused by the kind of stain originally used for its colouring.
The concept for the future restoration deals above all with the regeneration of the original - or else application of a new - coat of lac varnish.
